A great turn-out of 24 members took part in today’s opening day game, battling it out in 4 games of triples. President Ian Forman’s ‘red’ team and Vice President Phil Ward’s ‘black team’ went head to head over twelve ends with players switching positions after every four ends. All members were glad Saturday’s wintry showers had passed by as the weather held fair, if a wee bit chilly, throughout.
After Ian’s welcoming address, a lightning start on rink 1 and the better of the opening exchanges on his own rink, put the President’s side into an early lead. Phil’s team fought back though, gradually eating away at the margin throughout the second half. Eventually, a good win for the black team on rink 3 ensured the Vice President’s 12 came out on top by a narrow margin.
Everyone then tried their luck at winning the bottle on offer for the spider. Several players thought they might have done enough, with numerous touchers moving the jack, before it finally settled a foot away from Dave Lawson’s bowl. A well-earned cup of tea (and Mary’s famous rock cakes) helped warm up cold feet as Ian gave the closing remarks.
